The aged Buddhist hall building emanates a strong rhythm in itself. The clarity of structure and apertures posed refined orders and peace. The renovation brief to convert the ground floor space to a lecture hall and first floor private level to retreat rooms calls for sensitivity and respect to all these intrinsic qualities.

Existing ground floor openings are enlarged to exemplify the rhythm and promote circulation fluidity. To serve the acoustics and lighting purposes suitable for lectures, a double-layerd intervention of glass and solid sliding doors is proposed for the black-box scenario, which could be turned to a welcoming context at the same time by sliding open. Similar with the retreat rooms, a subtle wooden screen is layered to the opening which shield out strong glare, sculpting a calm interior for meditation.

Through minimal adaptations, the building is enlivened by new energies with historical spirit preserved.
